ECHOES OF THE UNSEEN
This semester, Unmasking Space will engage with the urban scale beyond the rational and efficient forces that shape it, exploring multiple perspectives to understand the city’s dynamics and power structures. A city can be captured on maps, diagrams, and guidebooks but conventional representations often overlook its hidden layers. By experiencing the city through employing alternative learning methods, we aim to uncover relationships and voices excluded from traditional maps and official narratives.
What are critical methods to engage with the city?
What are relevant stories in the city that are concealed, ignored, and left out?
Who defines the city and who benefits from it?
How do architectures reinforce or resist systems of control?
As the first recurring student-led course at the Department of Architecture of ETH Zurich, Unmasking Space has been actively working to question, expand, and rethink the content and methodologies of the official curriculum. To recognize students' voices from within, to disturb and to make noise, to challenge the established values, and to engage in epistemic disobedience. The full syllabus is available at https://unmasking.space/syllabus, with each session documented on our Instagram page @unmaskingspace.
We believe that working towards a counter-curriculum requires pedagogies of counter-spaces. Proposals are encouraged to experiment with such new settings of teaching and learning, outlined in the format, timespan, media, and budget of the session(s).
-The class will take place within a 1h30 time slot on Thursday afternoons in an allocated seminar room. However, we are open to other timeframes, locations or multiple sessions.
-Submissions are open to Bachelor, Master, or Ph.D. students worldwide. We also encourage applications from candidates who are currently not enrolled or part of an institution.
-Any media is welcome, but please include a short description (400 words) of a session proposal, including your topic, teaching format, and methodology.
-Please send us your proposal to unmaskingspace@arch.ethz.ch before the 26th of January. If you have any questions about the open call, feel free to reach out!
